Morphogen gradients: Nodal enters the stage
نویسنده
چکیده
Morphogen gradients are proposed to organise cell fates during development via the long-range activity of secreted molecules. Their existence in vertebrates, however, has been debated. A recent study has identified the Nodal-related protein Squint as a bona fide morphogen in vertebrate mesoderm.

When it pays to rush: interpreting morphogen gradients prior to steady-state.
During development, morphogen gradients precisely determine the position of gene expression boundaries despite the inevitable presence of fluctuations. Recent experiments suggest that some morphogen gradients may be interpreted prior to reaching steady-state. Theoretical work has predicted that such systems will be more robust to embryo-to-embryo fluctuations. By analyzing two experimentally mo...
متن کاملResponse to Nodal morphogen gradient is determined by the kinetics of target gene induction
Morphogen gradients expose cells to different signal concentrations and induce target genes with different ranges of expression. To determine how the Nodal morphogen gradient induces distinct gene expression patterns during zebrafish embryogenesis, we measured the activation dynamics of the signal transducer Smad2 and the expression kinetics of long- and short-range target genes. We found that ...
متن کاملA Temporal Window for Signal Activation Dictates the Dimensions of a Nodal Signaling Domain
Morphogen signaling is critical for the growth and patterning of tissues in embryos and adults, but how morphogen signaling gradients are generated in tissues remains controversial. The morphogen Nodal was proposed to form a long-range signaling gradient via a reaction-diffusion system, on the basis of differential diffusion rates of Nodal and its antagonist Lefty. Here we use a specific zebraf...
متن کاملMorphogen transport.
The graded distribution of morphogens underlies many of the tissue patterns that form during development. How morphogens disperse from a localized source and how gradients in the target tissue form has been under debate for decades. Recent imaging studies and biophysical measurements have provided evidence for various morphogen transport models ranging from passive mechanisms, such as free or h...
متن کاملNodal morphogens.
Nodal signals belong to the TGF-beta superfamily and are essential for the induction of mesoderm and endoderm and the determination of the left-right axis. Nodal signals can act as morphogens-they have concentration-dependent effects and can act at a distance from their source of production. Nodal and its feedback inhibitor Lefty form an activator/inhibitor pair that behaves similarly to postul...
